Grizzlies Ride First Period to Victory

You're not supposed to win a game with a 20 minute effort, but the Victoria Grizzlies did exactly that in a 5-4 win over the Clippers.

Victoria had a first period to remember outscoring Nanaimo 5-0, going 3 for 4 on the power play, outshooting the Clippers 13-5 and effectively silencing the Frank Crane Arena Crowd.

Wesley Myron started the scoring parade on a power play at 4:31, then it was Coltyn Hansen at 9:40 and Taylor Pernerowski at 11:59.  The Grizzlies man advantage added two more late in the period, Murphy at 14:23 and Ten Vaanholt at 16:23.

After an 11 point outburst by the Grizzlies top line in the third period on Wednesday – they combined for 8 in the first period on Sunday.

Clippers starting Chris Eiserman was chased from the net after one, making way from Billy Faust the rest of the day.

From that moment on it was all Clippers, they only scored one goal in the second period with David Iacono blasting one past Garrett Rockafellow from the blueline at 3:21 but they did outshoot Victoria 16-6 in the middle frame.

There was more from the Clippers in the third with Josh Phillips counting with a man up at 5:15, and then Graeme McCormack and Andrew Gladiuk scoring 15 seconds apart with just under five minutes to go.

Of note in the third period Victoria's Taylor Pernerowski was tossed from the game after a five minute blow to the head penalty on the Clippers Colton Cyr.

Sunday's game was also the first with Trevor Fitzgerald as the new Clipper captain.

The second year BCHLer has been a consistent performer for Nanaimo after a strong rookie campaign with the Vernon Vipers in 2010-2011.

Mike Vandekamp's club finished the game with a 40-24 advantage in shots but ultimately lost their third game in a row (0-2-0-1).  The season series now sits at two wins for each team with three more meetings and two in the next two weeks on October 28th and November 1st.

Three Stars were 1) Wesley Myron 2) Graeme McCormack 3) Jarryd Ten Vaanholt

Both teams play Langley next, Victoria hosts the Rivermen Thursday and the Clippers have the Rivermen on Friday.
