Nanaimo Clippers Go Abroad Signing Swedish Forward Gabriel Westling

The BCHL Nanaimo Clippers are thrilled to announce the signing of left-handed forward Gabriel Westling. The addition of Gabriel marks an exciting milestone for the Clippers as he becomes the first international player to join the team since their departure from Hockey Canada earlier.

Hailing from Mora, Sweden, Gabriel Westling was born on October 18, 2003. Standing an impressive 6’4” and weighing 203 lbs, Gabriel brings a formidable presence to the ice. Prior to joining the Clippers, Gabriel honed his skills in the esteemed Mora IK Hockey organization of the Sweden J20 Nationell League, where he showcased his exceptional talent before moving to North America in 2022.

During the 2022-2023 season, Gabriel played for the Maryland Black Bears of the NAHL where he amassed 10 goals and 16 assists, totalling 26 points across 42 regular season games. His contributions became even more evident during the playoffs, where Gabriel’s performance resulted in 3 goals and 5 assists, earning him a total of 8 points in just 10 games.

The transition from a European style of play to a North American style of play came with some adjustments for Gabriel. “Playing in Maryland, they wanted me to use my size, body, and strength more than I had in Sweden,” Gabriel said, “It was an adjustment but I think being familiar with a North American style will make my move to Nanaimo even easier.”

It’s evident speaking with Gabriel that he carries himself in a very mature manner and he believes that maturity is part of his game. “My game is mature,” Gabriel said proudly, “I’m comfortable out there and I feel I’m able to process the game faster than other players.”

The 20-year-old looks to end his junior career on a positive note before heading off to St. Lawrence University of the NCAA at the start of the 2024-25 season.
