Duncan — The Clippers five game winning streak against the Capitals came to an end Friday with a 4-2 loss at the Island Savings Centre.
The first period was scoreless thanks to the goaltending of Landon Pavlisin. Nanaimo was outshot 13-3 but Pavlisin stood tall, especially on a pair of Capitals power plays.
Cowichan Valley opened the scoring on a second period man advantage with a rebound goal by Jordan Robert. The Clippers tied the game on a power of their own when Sammy Steele fed Ethan Scardina and he buried a one timer behind Pierce Diamond.
In the third period the Clippers forged ahead on a shot from the slot by Marcus Mitchell, but Brady Lynn evened the game with a one timer on a Cowichan man advantage.
Jordan Robert jammed in a controversial power play goal with five minutes to play that proved to be the game winner. Nanaimo argued there was a hand pass on the play, and also felt the puck was covered in the crease but the goal was allowed to stand.
Preston Brodziak ended the night with an empty netter for the Capitals.
The final shots were 41-22 in Cowichan’s favour and Landon Pavlisin was very strong in goal in a losing cause.
The power plays were a key factor in the result with the Capitals going 3/5 and Nanaimo finishing 1/2.
Friday’s Three Stars were Jordan Robert (2 goals), Pierce Diamond (20 saves), and Brady Lynn (1 goal, 1 assist).
Nanaimo is now 5-1 against the Capitals with a home and home series still remaining on the schedule on February 1st and 2nd.
On Saturday the Clippers host the Salmon Arm Silverbacks in a rematch of last Sunday’s 6-3 setback in Salmon Arm.
