WHARRIE THE HERO AS CLIPPERS TRIUMPH 4-3 IN OT VERSUS KINGS

The Clippers put in extra time for a pair of important games against Island Division opponents.

Friday it was a 3-3 tie in Victoria and Saturday a 4-3 overtime win in Powell River.

Saturday’s game was scoreless through the first period with both teams playing at a high pace and getting solid goaltending from the Kings Mitch Adamyk and the Clippers Taz Burman.

Brady Lynn opened the scoring on a breakaway in the second period but Powell River’s Carmine Buono evened the score with a screened point shot.

Lynn notched another break away goal to put the Clippers back in front and then Preston Brodziak scored from in close to give Nanaimo the advantage late in the game.

Ben Thomas and Ben Berard both scored in the back half of the period for the Kings to put some pressure on Nanaimo and send the game to OT.

Jordan Wharrie played hero for the Clippers by getting the winner and helping the team to earn three out of a possible four points on the road over the weekend.

The final shots were 33-26 or the Kings and neither team could score on special teams with a combined five chances on the man advantage, three of those for Powell River.

With the win Nanaimo evened the season series to four wins apiece, the Clippers also won three of the four head to head games at the Hap Parker Arena.

The win on Saturday pulled the Clippers within three points of Powell River for second place in the Island Division.

Nanaimo sits five points behind the first place Grizzlies with a head to head game Wednesday at Frank Crane Arena.
