Post Game Recap – Feb. 27th, 2026

In what could serve as a potential first-round playoff preview, the Nanaimo Clippers dropped a 3-1 decision to the Victoria Grizzlies on home ice. Victoria struck just one minute into the game. The Grizzlies added another early to take control, while Nanaimo struggled to generate sustained pressure in the opening period. Hayden Fechner provided life in the second with his 25th goal of the season, capitalizing on a breakaway after a defensive steal. Special teams proved to be the difference, as the Clippers failed to convert on seven power play opportunities, including a four-on-three and a brief five-on-three. Elliot Seguin-Lescarbeau kept Nanaimo within striking distance with key saves, particularly during multiple Victoria power plays. The Clippers pressed for an equalizer in the third but could not solve the Grizzlies’ penalty kill. Late pressure from Victoria, including a pair of posts, eventually led to an insurance goal that sealed the outcome.

Victoria wasted no time setting the tone, striking just one minute into the opening period. Following a review, officials determined a high-sticking infraction had been missed on the play, resulting in a four-minute power play for Nanaimo. Despite the extended opportunity, the Clippers were unable to capitalize with the man advantage. Moments later, the Grizzlies extended their lead with a crisp passing sequence that beat the Nanaimo goaltender cleanly, making it 2-0 early. The Clippers struggled to generate sustained offensive pressure throughout the remainder of the period, spending much of the frame on their heels. A late power play chance offered Nanaimo another opportunity to respond, but once again the special teams unit came up empty, sending the game to intermission with Victoria firmly in control.

Nanaimo began the second period shorthanded, carrying over a late penalty from the opening frame, but managed to successfully kill it off and settle into the game. Four minutes in, Hayden Fechner provided a much-needed spark, picking the pocket of a Victoria defender before breaking in alone and burying his 25th goal of the season to cut the deficit to 2-1. Momentum appeared to swing in the Clippers’ favour as a string of penalties created extended power play time, including a four-on-three and a brief five-on-three advantage. Despite the prime opportunities, Nanaimo was unable to convert and draw even. The parade to the penalty box continued, this time handing Victoria chances with the extra man, but goaltender Elliot Seguin-Lescarbeau stood tall. Turning aside every Grizzlies attempt, he kept the Clippers within one heading into the final frame.

The Clippers opened the third period on their fifth power play of the night, but the struggles with the man advantage continued. Like the previous four opportunities, Nanaimo was unable to find the equalizer. Two additional power play chances later in the frame also came up empty, as the Grizzlies’ penalty kill held firm and protected their one-goal lead. As time wound down, Victoria began to tilt the ice, generating sustained pressure in the Nanaimo zone. A pair of shots rang off the post before the Grizzlies finally capitalized, burying their third goal to put the game out of reach. Despite a strong effort from Elliot Seguin-Lescarbeau to keep the Clippers within striking distance, Nanaimo fell 3-1 on home ice.

The three stars of the game were awarded to Victoria’s goalie Mikus Vecvanags, forward Artie Gross, and Nanaimo’s Hayden Fechner.

FortisBC Energy Player of the Game was given to Jack Rimmer.

The Clippers head to Powell River to face the Kings on Saturday. The next Nanaimo home game is Friday, March 6th against these same Victoria Grizzlies. Tickets can be purchased at Nanaimoclippers.com or the Frank Crane box office on game day.
