Clippers take on the Victoria Grizzlies

The Clippers return to BCHL action this afternoon with a game against the Victoria Grizzlies. The team they defeated in the extended exhibition series to win the Island Cup.

The team will be a bit different than the one that won the Island Cup, as some players decided to move on or unavailable due to COVID restrictions.

Forward #27 Trevor LeDonne has been appointed captain and will be leading the Clippers in his final season of Junior A hockey. He also just recently committed to the University of St. Thomas – Minnesota. Joining Trevor as assistants are: #29 Liam Ryan, #61 Baxter Anderson and #53 Jack O’Brien.

One player that will be missed is Tim Washe who was called up to university over Christmas. The coaching staff recruited Nolan Hutcheson to help fill his shoes. The 6’4”, 205 lb. Ontario native had played the previous three seasons with the Sudbury Wolves of the OHL. In 183 games he scored 47 goals and had 42 assists.

There will be a bit more Nanaimo presence on the teams as Luke Lavery, Brendan Carlson and Ethan Jones were added. Luke and Brendan came from the North Island Silvertips, while Ethan Jones was acquired from the Fort McMurray Oil Barons of the AJHL.

It’s going to be a quick and hectic season with the team playing 20 games in a five-week period. The games are playing under a pod system with all games being played at Weyerhaeuser Arena in Port Alberni. The first game is to day, with the last game being May 8. 12 of the games will be played at 7 p.m., six at 1 p.m., one at 3 p.m. and one at 5 p.m.
