NANAIMO — A fast-paced, low-scoring game ended with the Powell River Kings beating the Clippers 2-1. There was no scoring in the first period with the Clippers’ Jordan Naylor and Kings Hayden Missler both looking sharp.

Ryan Brushett had the only goal of the second period when he grabbed a loose puck and ripped it in up high on the stick side. On an early third period power play Jayden Lee scored on a point shot to put Powell River up 2-0.

There was controversy later in the third when Aiden Hansen-Bukata appeared to have scored on a Nanaimo man advantage but it was waved off for contact with the goaltender. Gunnar Wegleitner scored the Clippers only goal shortly after when he got all of a wicked shot from the right side.

Nanaimo pressed in the last few minutes of the game including having a six on four opportunity with the goalie pulled but couldn’t manufacture the tying goal.

The Clippers outshot the Kings 34-30, while they finished 0 for 3 on the power play and 2 for 3 on the penalty kill.

Sunday’s Three Stars were Ryan Brushett (1 goal,  1 assist), Jayden Lee (1 goal), and Gunnar Wegleitner (1 goal).

The Kings have won all four head to head games this season and these same two teams will battle again next Saturday in Powell River. Before then Nanaimo will visit the Alberni Valley Bulldogs Friday at 7pm.
