[Nanaimo, December 29, 2023] – The Nanaimo Clippers are pleased to announce the return of Colin Birkas to the bench as well as in his duties as General Manager.
"We are pleased to welcome Colin back to his leadership role within the organization," said Brad Kwong, Managing Partner of the Nanaimo Clippers. "Our priority has always been the well-being of our players and staff, and following the conclusion of this extensive investigation we are confident in Colin's ability to continue fostering a supportive environment that is focused on player development and overall team success."
Despite challenges posed by the protracted investigation, going forward, the Clippers have remained dedicated to ensuring continuity within the coaching staff. In an effort to limit any disruption to the players and in response to the team’s on-ice success, Interim Head Coach Bob Beatty will continue for the immediate future, working alongside Colin and Gaelen Patterson as Assistant Coaches. Colin will resume Head Coaching duties on March 15th. This process of gradually introducing Colin back to his full-time GM and Coaching duties is welcomed by Birkas, “It’s best for me personally as this process has been so long and hard on me. I’m happy to be easing my way back to where I was prior”.
“I’m really impressed with the work the interim staff has done so far this season. It’s a younger team than we have had here in the last few years, along with the adversity we have faced it’s really a credit to Bob and Gaelen that not only have they kept the team going but we have seen constant improvement and the players are having fun,” said Colin Birkas. “I’m excited to join the group and help in any way I can,” Birkas added. “I would also like to thank all the returning players from last season and all the players who committed to our program since last season for deciding to remain Clippers throughout this extended process.”
