DUNCAN – A classic Nanaimo versus Cowichan game ended with the Capitals winning 4-3 in overtime on Saturday.
The Caps had the only goal of the first on a shorthanded effort from Max Newton.
There was also a disallowed goal for Cowichan Valley when the puck went in after the net was knocked off.
That particular net being knocked off would be a factor later in the game as well.
In the second period Nanaimo turned the game with a partial breakaway goal by Danny Pion and a power play deflection off the stick of Matt Creamer
Even though Max Newton tied the game at 2-2, Jake Harris got in alone and beat Lane Michasiw to give the Clippers the lead back heading to the third.
In the first minute of the third a wraparound goal was credited to Cowichan’s Michael Montambault but goalie Evan DeBrouwer was adamant the puck didn’t go in legally.
It appeared the puck may have slipped under the net, which had come loose several times in the game.
The game stayed tied until three on three overtime when Jared Domin scored to give the Capitals the win.
The shots finished 37-34 for the Caps with the Clippers going 1/4 on the power play and 5/5 a man down.
With three games left in the season series Nanaimo is 2-2-0-1 against Cowichan Valley and they trail their division rivals by four points for third place in the island division.
This week the Clippers are home to Victoria Wednesday and then Wenatchee on Friday with a road game in Victoria on Sunday the 11th.
