Clippers are Island Division Champions after beating the Powell River Kings

The Clippers are Island Division Champions for the second year in a row after beating the second place Powell River Kings on Saturday night.

It was a roller coaster of a game with the Clippers trailing for most of it, but they came back to win 5-3.

For the second straight night Nanaimo got down 2-0 in the first period.

First it was Liam Lawson converting off an end wall bounce on the power play, and then Brandon Kennedy on a rebound.

Nanaimo got a goal back in the second when Matt Hoover rifled home a Will Reilly pass, only to have Nick Halagian finish a passing play on another man advantage for Powell River.

Only one other time this season have the Clippers erased a second period deficit, but on Saturday the flood gates opened in the third.

First it was Sheldon Rempal with some great moves to get in alone, then Nolan Aibel with a wrist shot on the power play, Matt Creamer jammed in a loose puck in the Kings crease, and Rempal wrapped it up with an empty net goal.

The Clippers Evan Johnson beat the Kings goaltending duo of Stefan Wornig and Jeff Smith as Nanaimo outshot Powell River 48-37.

Both teams had two power play goals with the power plays at 7-6 for the Kings.

Saturday’s Three Stars were 1) Devin Brosseau (4 assists) 2) Liam Lawson 3) Nolan Aibel

Nanaimo will see who wins the battle for the last playoff spot between Alberni Valley and Victoria, that will be their first round opponent on March 4th.
