NANAIMO — The Clippers winning streak started against Langley, and it reached eight games with a victory over the Rivermen on Saturday. Nanaimo won 5-2 on a night that the team honoured it’s alumni.
Langley opened the scoring in a shot from the slot by Garrett Daly but the Clippers would take a 2-1 lead to the first intermission on goals by Tyler Williams and Markus Mitchell. Robby Drazner scored a shorthanded goal in the second period when he beat Braedon Fleming on a cross ice feed from Williams.
Gunnar Wegleitner roofed a shot to the short side to give Nanaimo a stranglehold early in the third before Riley Wallack scored in tight on Jordan Naylor to cut the gap to 4-2. Ethan Scardina’s empty net tally locked the game down with just seconds left to play.
Nanaimo outshot Langley 30-26, and neither team scored a power play with the Clippers getting four chances to the Rivermen’s two.
Saturday’s Three Stars were Tyler Williams (1 goal, 1 assist), Markus Mitchell (1 goal, 1 assist), and Gunnar Wegleitner (1 goal, 1 assist).
The win sets up a great matchup Sunday with the Wenatchee Wild coming to Frank Crane Arena for a 2 p.m. matinee. Nanaimo won 5-4 in overtime in Wenatchee back in October.
