POWELL RIVER — The final game of 2016 was a hard fought battle but in the end the Clippers couldn’t muster enough offence in a 4-1 a loss in Powell River.
Nanaimo had stretches of strong play in the game, especially on the wall, but couldn’t produce the goals they needed.
In the first period the Kings scored on a two on one, when Ben Berard snapped a shot behind Evan DeBrouwer.
They added two more goals late in the second, Gavin Rauser on a rebound, and Cam Donaldson on the power play.
Nanaimo had a strong push in third that started with a power play goal from Jake Harris and continued with a disallowed goal on the man advantage just a few minutes later.
In a spirited final two minutes, Shawn Guison was tossed from the game for a blow to the head call and Adam Pilotte got into a scrap with the Kings Jack Long.
Curtis McCarrick ended any hope of a comeback with his power play empty netter with 55 seconds left.
The shots finished 33-28 Powell River with Mitch Adamyk getting the win over Evan DeBrouwer.
On special teams the Kings finished 2/6 on the man advantage and the Clippers were 1/4.
December ends with Nanaimo holding down 4th spot in the Island Division and a 14-19-1-5 record.
2017 starts with a trio of home games, January 4th against Victoria, January 6th versus Cowichan, and January 8th against Prince George.
