The Nanaimo Clippers put together a complete team performance on home ice, shutting out the Langley Rivermen 5-0 on Saturday night. A tight, physical first period saw Justin Collins open the scoring off a slick tic-tac-toe passing play. From there, the Clippers took over in the second, scoring four unanswered goals—including three on the power play. Hayden Fechner led the charge with two goals and an assist, while Jack Rimmer and Elliot Perreault also struck on the man advantage. Nanaimo’s penalty kill came up strong early in the third, preserving the shutout and snuffing out any momentum for the Rivermen. Defensively, the Clippers clogged lanes, blocked shots, and limited Langley’s chances throughout the final frame. Tensions flared late as a fight broke out between Peyten Legg-Cote and Langley’s Andrew Petruk, but Nanaimo kept their cool and closed out the win.
The Clippers came out with energy in the opening frame, nearly striking early when Nathan Larioza fired a shot that rang off the post just minutes in. On the other end, Matson Waring came up with a clutch defensive play, blocking a dangerous shot with the boot of his skate to keep the game scoreless. Both teams struggled to find their rhythm through the first half of the period, with sloppy puck movement and multiple players losing their footing on the ice. The physical tone ramped up midway through, highlighted by a big hit from Mitchell Patrick that flattened a Langley forward during a push by the Rivermen. The breakthrough came on a crisp tic-tac-toe passing play, as Tanner Bruender set up Justin Collins in the slot for the game’s opening goal, giving the Clippers a 1-0 lead. Nanaimo had a golden opportunity to extend the lead late in the period with a two-man advantage after back-to-back Langley penalties, but the Clippers couldn’t capitalize before the buzzer.
The Clippers found their stride in the second period, pulling away with a dominant stretch of offensive execution. Midway through the frame, Hayden Fechner doubled Nanaimo’s lead, making it 2-0 with a well-placed finish that gave the Clippers some breathing room. Moments later, the Clippers went to the power play and wasted no time converting, as Elliot Perreault ripped a shot past the Langley goaltender to make it 3-0. The special teams continued to roll—on their fourth power play opportunity of the night, Jack Rimmer capitalized with a goal off a sharp feed from Fechner, extending the lead to 4-0. Before the period was out, Nanaimo drew yet another penalty and made Langley pay once again. Fechner buried his second goal of the night on the man advantage, capping off a dominant period that saw the Clippers strike three times on the power play and take full control of the game with a 5-0 lead heading into the third.
The Clippers opened the final period shorthanded after Nathan Larioza’s late second-period penalty, but the penalty kill unit stood tall and preserved the clean sheet. With a comfortable lead, Nanaimo focused on shutting things down defensively, clogging lanes and suffocating any attempts by the Rivermen to mount a comeback. As frustration grew for Langley, tensions finally boiled over. Rivermen forward Andrew Petruk dropped the gloves with Peyten Legg-Cote in a spirited fight, with both players heading to the box after a lengthy tilt. The altercation failed to spark a response from the visitors, as the Clippers ran down the clock with disciplined play and fended off a late flurry of pressure. With a strong defensive effort in the third, Nanaimo closed out a convincing 5-0 win, locking down both ends of the ice in a statement performance.
The three stars of the game were awarded to Fechner, Rimmer, and Seguin-Lescarbeau, respectively. FortisBC Energy Player of the Game was given to Justin Collins.
The Clippers are back in action on Oct. 3 when they face off against the Cowichan Valley Capitals. The next Nanaimo home game takes place at noon on Wednesday, Oct. 8 against the same Captials.
