JEREMY GERVAIS NAMED TOP D-MAN AT TELUS CUP

From the Prince George Citizen

Jeremy Gervais did not get to taste playoff action in the Telus Cup but his outstanding play patrolling the blueline for the Cariboo Cougars in the preliminary round in the six-team national midget championship was not overlooked.
The 18-year-old from Prince George was selected the top defenceman of the tournament, announced Saturday at the awards banquet at the Civic Centre.
Gervais, who committed last week to join the Nanaimo Clippers of the BCHL for next season, collected four assists in five Telus Cup games. His four points left him tied with winger Tyler Maser for the scoring lead among the Cougars.
The Cougars (1-2-2) finished sixth in the tournament but came up one goal shy of advancing to the semifinals when they tied Mississauga 2-2 in their final preliminary round game Friday.
In other Telus Cup awards, Cape Breton West Islanders 17-year-old centre Jacob Hudson was picked as the tournament’s most valuable player. Hudson, the Islanders captain, finished with a goal and three assists in seven games. He scored his team’s first goal in its 5-4 overtime win against the Saint-Francois Blizzard in the gold-medal final.
Blizzard centre Maxime Collin won the top scorer and most sportsmanlike player awards. The 17-year-old from St-Augustin, Que., had three goals and four assists for seven points in seven games, without drawing any penalties.
Mississauga Rebels goalie Christan Purboo, 17, was the top goaltender. In six games the Oakville, Ont., native compiled a 1.60 goals-against average and .939 save percentage with two shutouts.
The top forward award went to 16-year-old Dillon Hamaliuk of the Leduc Oil Kings. Hamaliuk, a native of Leduc, Alta., finished with two goals and four assists for six points in five games.
