The Clippers faced a team that is quickly becoming their nemesis on Saturday. The Powell River Kings beat the Clippers 5-2 at Frank Crane Arena, and it was the third straight victory the Kings have recorded over Nanaimo this season. A deflection goal by Mitchell Williams gave the Kings a 1-0 lead after the first period and they extended that to 2-0 on an early second period tally by Ryan Brushett. The Clippers answered that goal with a breakaway effort by Gunnar Wegleitner who scored in his second game since being acquired in a trade earlier in the week. Matt Fawcett continued the second period scoring parade with a shot that banked in off a defender, before Ben Berard snapped home a power play goal to up the lead to 4-1. That goal was scored during a blow to the head major penalty assessed to the Clippers Blake Bonnar. Kyler Kovich scored has second goal of the season on a rebound in the final minute of the second to narrow the gap to 4-2 heading to the intermission break. The middle period was one of the more entertaining of the season with five goals being exchanged and the shots finishing 18-16 for Nanaimo. Offense was harder to come by in the third as the only goal came on a late opportunity by Matt Rickard when he jumped off the point to beat Landon Pavlisin for the 5-2 marker. The final shots were 37-26 for the Kings with Mitch Adamyk getting the win in net. Powell River finished 1/5 on the man advantage while the Clippers were 0/3 on the night. Saturday’s Three Stars were: Ben Berard, 1 goal, 2 assists; Kyler Kovich, 1 goal; and Ryan Brushett, 1 goal, 1 assist. The Clippers are off until Sunday, October 7th when they host the Trail Smoke Eaters at 2 p.m.
