FRIDAY THE 13TH UNLUCKY FOR CLIPPERS WITH 8-0 LOSS TO KINGS

NANAIMO – Maybe it was because of Friday the 13th or maybe it was just one of those nights, but Nanaimo’s 8-0 home loss to Powell River was one to forget.

The night started off with a tribute to Clippers captain Spencer Hewson for his 200th career game but it ended with a victory celebration for the road team.

The first period ended scoreless but the second saw an explosion of six goals by the Kings.

Carter Turnbull and Jonny Evans scored early, then there was a pair from Kyle Betts including one on the man advantage.

Before the second period was over Curtis McCarrick and Cam Donaldson added goals as well.

To start the third period Nanaimo pulled Austin Roden in favour of Evan DeBrouwer but Powell River ended up tallying two more goals.

Carmine Buono and Nanaimo Buccaneers affiliate Trent Bell added markers in the third period to give the Kings a record of 4-2 in the eight game season series.

Powell River outshot Nanaimo 38-34 and the power plays were 1/5 for the Kings and 0/3 for the Clippers.

Kings goalie Brian Wilson recorded the shutout.

Next up for Nanaimo is a crucial home and home series with Alberni Valley on January the 20th and 21st that will go a long way to deciding the final playoff spot in the Island Division.
